Honey colored light streamed through the large window in the kitchen. I smiled to myself as I heard Tess slowly step down the stairs, making her way toward the kitchen with each step.

Stepping into the large kitchen, she was greeted by the sight of me. I was shirtless and standing over the oven. One of my strong hands was wrapped expertly around a stainless steel spatula. My pale eyes were focused on the large cast-iron skillet that rested on the gas stove.

"Simon went into town early this morning." I said, pushing the spatula under the egg that crackled in the skillet. Quickly, I flipped it over, mostly ignoring the small splash of grease as it popped upward. Somehow, I had managed not to bust the yolk in the process. That, in and of itself, was a feat that amazed Tess. A small droplet landed against the skin of my hand that connected my thumb and forefinger. I frowned, more annoyed than anything. Lifting my hand upward, I inspected the small red spot for a moment, then closed my hand in a tight fist.

She leaned back against the cold counter top, watching me as I slid the metal of the utensil under the golden edges of the egg, ensuring that it did not stick to the bottom of the pan. The cool stone of the counter offered a reprieve from the warm air that filled the house.

"How'd you sleep last night?" I asked, lifting my gaze from the pan.

"Pretty well. How about you?" I smiled down at the woman, taking my eyes off of the skillet. Though, that did not stop me from pushing the stainless steel under the egg and then lifting it upward before placing it on one of the plates that lay on the counter beside me.

"Nice glasses." I noted, a bit of humor in my voice.

"I forgot to pack contact solution, so it was either this or walk around blind."

I nodded, reaching for the small glass container of salt that rested beside the stove. Quickly, I sprinkled it into the pan, adding until I was satisfied.

"I made you breakfast."

"Thank you."

Rain pattered against the roof of the house. Most of the storm had died down; they had made it through the worst part of it. Now, they only had to deal with the typical warm drizzle that summer usually brought.

I opened my hand once more, moving it so that it came to rest on the white cloth that lay on the counter beside the stove.

"You sure you slept okay?" I asked, watching her face closely. My features were painted with a deep kind of concern; it was still something that she was not used to seeing on me.

"Yeah, why?" She raised an eyebrow, watching my face as I reached for another egg.

"You talk in your sleep. You know that?"

"No... What did I say?"

I shook my head, cracking the egg against the side of the skillet with one hand.

"Nothing in particular. Just a bunch of fragmented sentences; I couldn't really gather what you were talking about.
